The Little Minister was adapted by James Barrie for
the
theatre. It was only after he saw Maude Adams in a performance that he
was convinced to adapt and rewrite sections of his book so that she
might play the character Lady Babbie. The play was on Broadway in 1897
and ran for 300 nights and set numerous box office records at the time.
The first Maude Adams edition of this book was published in 1898 by R.
H. Russell of New York.
Caldwell published this title in four formats that were advertised in a
non series format beginning in 1899. Frequently these editions are
called the "Maude Adams' Editions".
The Popular Edition was published between 1899 and 1904. It has a gold
gilt decoration on the cover and has a gold gilt top. It is illustrated
by J. W. Kennedy with pictures that are from the play. It originally
came with a dust jacket. 454 pages. It is 7.75 x 5.25.
The Sarony Edition was published between 1899 and 1904 also. It has a
gold gilt decoration and a gold gilt top. It is illustrated with
photographs from the play. The text is the same as the Popular Edition
but the book is slightly larger at 8.25 x 5.75. It originally came with
a dust jacket.
The Green Room Edition was published between 1899 and 1913. Between
1900 and 1902 it was part of the Green Room Edition Series. It has gold
gilt cover lettering and decoration and a gold gilt top. The text is
the same as the Popular and Sarony editions covered in 454 pages. It is
illustrated with photographs from the play. It is 9 x 6. This book came

The Kirriemuir Edition is a two volume boxed set published between 1899
and 1913. The books have been seen in green or red. The cover has gold
gilt decorations, lettering and a gold top.
The books have etchings drawn by G. W. Ritchie. These illustrations are
on a special deckel-edge paper". Within the box is an envelope that
contains 32 photographs from the play. Also there is a portrait of
Maude Adams, the star of the play. Each book is 7.5 x 5.
